Vincentians with St. Peter's deliver 50-55 food hampers every month.

Others pack and deliver bread donated by a local bakery, or help sort food donated by Catholic schools in our parish.

How can you help?

  • Donate non-perishable food items:
Canned fish & meats   Oatmeal (1kg)   Peanut butter   Jam   Canned fruit   Canned beans

  • Donate cash or grocery store gift cards
Use the SSVP envelopes found in pew boxes or in the SSVP Donation Box located in the narthex.
Always include your name and address. Donations are tax receiptable. But SSVP is NOT connected to your parish offering, so parish envelope numbers are not helpful.

Donations can be made through pre-authorized bank payments!
(Contact SSVP for details.)

  • St. Peter's SSVP has 90+ Vincentians.
  • They contribute more than 3,500 volunteer hours a year!

Our Vincentians:

  • Organize & maintain our pantry

Food Rescue
SSVP at St. Peter's collects & shares nutritious, high-quality, free food from food "rescue" programs operated by Cobs in Crowfoot, Community Kitchens, Second Harvest, and the Save On at Huntington Hills.

  • All of our hampers get bread. Every week, 5-10 families get a special delivery of our extra Cobs bread.

  • We also share bread with the SSVP at St. Bernard's in Bowness, a junior high school in NE Calgary, BowWest Community Resource Centres (which serves every community in our parish), and with agencies like Alpha House, a downtown Calgary agency that works with people whose lives are affected by addiction.
  • In August 2021, we started sharing bread with Feed the Hungry, an initiative run by the Calgary Catholic Diocese.

  • We belong to Spinz Around, operated by Community Kitchens. That program provides all of the breakfast cereal in our hampers, plus frozen meats, fresh vegetables, yogurt, fancy cheese, and sundries like granola bars. All of this food is EXTRA (not "instead of") to our hampers.

  • Second Harvest, a food rescue agency that opened in Calgary during the pandemic, tracks the food we've "rescued" in NW Calgary. Since May 2021, our SSVP has completed 7 rescues for a combined saving of $822. That included +100 lbs of potatoes!

  • Thanks to Save On Foods in Huntington, the families who get extra bread on Thursdays also get free milk, yogurt, and assorted baked goods. We sometimes get so much milk we've shared it with a lunch program in Bowness and Alpha House downtown.
